amniocentesis

amniocentesis

The amniocentesis procedure is performed by experienced physicians in the office or hospital, is a painless procedure and has little risk for the baby. The fluid is left in the culture environment for 18-20 days in the laboratory. After this stage, the chromosome structures of these cells are examined numerically and structurally. The produced cells are collected at a certain stage, their chromosomes are separated and the chromosomes are analyzed by viewing under a microscope. In this way, the problems in the baby's chromosomes can be easily seen, and at the same time, the sex of the baby is revealed by examining the sex chromosomes. However, due to the laws, gender definition is not made after amniocentesis in our country. If there is a blood mismatch between the spouses, a blood mismatch injection (Anti D Immunoglobulin) should be performed within the first 72 hours after amniocentesis.

When chromosomal abnormality is detected, the effects of this anomaly on the fetus are described in detail to the family. The decision to take care of an anomaly baby or to ask for the continuation of the pregnancy is entirely up to the family.

Amniocentesis is not important in the detection of skeletal diseases or heart diseases. Level 2 ultrasounds on such problems have an important place. The amniocentesis is rested for 10-15 minutes. After the procedure, the doctor will do USG to check the baby's condition, heart rate, whether there is bleeding at the place where the amniocentesis needle enters, and inform the patient about this.

After the procedure, three days should be rested as much as possible, drink plenty of water, do not have intercourse and follow the rules of hygiene exactly.

In what cases amniocentesis is performed ?

- If there is a genetic problem in the family in the baby due to a genetic disorder or chromosome disorder, there is,
- if the mother is 35 years of age and older, the,
- If a high risk is detected in a double or triple test, the,
- In pregnant women who have detected suspicious and abnormal findings on ultrasound,
- For the detection of some blood diseases, which depend on gender,
- in the pregnancy of couples with hereditary disease, the,
- Amniocentesis should be recommended as the patient is more likely to be born due to genetic similarity in relatives marriages.

What are the risks of amniocentesis?

- Since the amniocentesis process is performed under ultrasonic observation, the risks for the patient and the baby are considerably reduced. There is little to no loss of pregnancy.
- If amniocentesis is performed under extremely sterile conditions, the risk of infection in the amniotic fluid is low.
- after the procedure, if there are signs of infection such as pain, fever, discharge or water comes, the doctor should be informed.
The cramp seen during or immediately after the procedure resolves after a few hours.
- Complaint of coming in 1-2% of water after the procedure resolves without intervention in a few days.
The risk of processing-related miscarriage is about 1/1000 (1000 in 1)...
